A brand with artisan’s soul beyond the product

The recreation of traditional value within collaboration of modern artists and the artisans

Intangible cultural assets-Somok-jang(carenter), Ottchil-jang(lacquerer) and Chilbo artisans (silver enamel artists)- collaborate together with modern artists and designers in order to create a lustrous piece of Cheyul. Furthermore, Cheyul inherits the traditional heritage and reinterprets as unearthing the talent, young artists with “Cheyul Ottchil (lacquer art) Laboratory.” “Cheyul Ottchil (lacquer art) Laboratory” has focused on reinterpreting Korean traditional arts and branding our products as masterpieces while we attempt to combine the invented colors on new materials. The product of Cheyul embodies the devotion and spirit of the artisans because we pursue the invisible values beyond everything.

우리 고유의 아름다움을 발견하고 전통의 가치를 현대에 되살리고자 전통 장인들과 현대 작가들의 협업으로 탄생하는 채율은 여러작가들의 노력이 모여 하나의 작품이 만들어집니다. 무형문화재로 인정받은 소목장, 옻칠장, 나전장을 중심으로 은 대공 장인, 칠보작가, 상상력을 더하는 젊은 작가 그리고 디자이너가 협력하여 이 세상에 하나밖에 없는 최고의 예술 작품이 탄생합니다. 또한, 명장의 기술에 머물지 않고 역량있는 젊은 작가를 발굴하여 전통의 맥을 계승하고 새롭게 해석하는데 중점을 두고 있으며 채율 옻칠 연구소를 개설하여 운영 중에 있습니다. 채율 옻칠 연구소는 옻칠의 다양한 색감을 개발하고 새로운 소재와 접목하여 보다 창의적인 디자인으로 전통을 재해석하고 명품으로 브랜딩 하는데 주력하고 있습니다. 최고의 제품을 넘어 보이지 않는 가치를 추구하는 채율은 각 분야의 장인과 작가들의 영혼이 깃들어 있는 브랜드입니다.

Cheyul’s Somok-jang (carpenter) uses only the best quality wood such as birch wood with durable and strong grain, Chinese mahogany with beautiful patterns, zelkova wood with deep grain that traces the passage of time and ash wood which is light and strong against water. Preserving the natural features of each type of woods comes prior to all others for the Somok-jang when crafting Cheyul’s products.
채율 소목장은 결이 견고하고 단단한 자작나무, 무늬 결이 아름다운 참죽나무, 항온, 항습 효과가 뛰어난 오동나무와 세월을 이겨낸 깊은 무늬 결의 느티나무, 물에 강하고 가벼운 물푸레나무 등 최고의 목재만을 사용하여 자연이 선물해 준 무늬 결을 그대로 살려내고 있습니다.

Ottchil

옻칠 漆

Ottchil (lacquer art), which uses sap extracted from the lacquer tree, is known for its unique color, luster, soft texture and delightful aroma. An interesting characteristic of Ottchil is that its luster increases over time. However, achieving this long-lasting perfect shine involves an extremely long and complicated production process. Thus, Ottchil art truly embodies the devotion and spirit of the artisans.
옻나무에서 채취한 수액을 사용하는 옻칠 공예는 특유의 빛깔과 광택, 부드 러운 질감과 좋은 향이 특징이며 시간이 지날수록 옻빛을 발하는 아름다운 재료입니다. 수많은 단계에 이르는 제작 과정은 복잡할 뿐만 아니라 제작 기간도 길어 장인의 정성과 영혼이 깃든 예술 작품입니다.

Najeon

천 년의 빛깔,
나전 螺鈿

Najeon (Mother of Pearl) is a traditional decorative art in Korea with more than a million years of history. Its main ingredient is the inner shell layer of various seashells such as abalone and conch. Najeon shines in five beautiful colors of purple, pink, yellow, green and blue. It has traditionally been shaped into ivy patterns of the butterfly, chrysanthemum, peony blossom and lotus flower, etc. These repetitive patterns stand for longevity and wealth as well as other meaningful messages.
나전은 전복과 소라 등의 패각을 사용한 천년 이상의 역사를 자랑하는 우리 고유의 전통 공예입니다. 보라, 분홍, 노랑, 초록, 파랑 다섯 가지 빛깔의 신비한 아름다움을 자아내는 나전은 나비, 국화, 모란, 연화 등의 당초(덩굴) 문양으로 만들어져 반복적인 미를 드러낼 뿐만 아니라 장수와 부귀 등 상징적 이야기가 담긴 최고의 예술 작품입니다.

Chilbo

영원히 변치 않는 보석,
은 칠보 七寶

Chilbo (silver enameling), which means seven jewels of paradise in Buddhist scriptures, shines the most when applied on silver. Cheyul’s Chilbo has three representative patterns: the peony blossom, symbolizing wealth and honor, the balloon flower, promising eternal love, and the Beck-ssu-beck-ppok, wishing good health and longevity. All of these patterns deliver deep meanings of life in addition to their gorgeous colors.
불교 경전에 나오는 극락세계의 일곱 가지 보석을 의미하는 칠보는 은과 어우러져 영롱한 색채의 아름다움을 자아내고 있습니다. 순은 위에 은선을 올려 문양을 만들고, 다양한 색 상의 유약을 올린 뒤 고온의 가마에서 굽기를 여러 번 구워 완성되는 채율 은 칠보는 전통 적인 원색과 현대적인 파스텔색의 조화가 특징입니다.
